L e c t u r e 9. Lying we don"t always communicate honestly with one another. All paths to enlightenment (religious, soul, psychology) = truth . The truth is a lot easier to remember. Truth: always assumed to be present in daily conversations. Closer relationships = higher expectations of truth = greater betrayal. Equivocation: boy that"s an unusual out t (indirect) Hinting: should i order desert? oh those deserts are terribly over-priced (instead of saying: no, you"re obese) ~subsidiary reasoning. *sometimes failure to speak the truth might result in worse consequences, but is it ever ethical to lie? (at times, yes, if it is leading to a greater good or helping someone else) Culturally learned: what it means to be female (culturally variable) Gender roles change (businesswomen today are a lot more common than be- fore) while biological change is a lot slower (females enter puberty earlier)
