Some union sympathizers in the confederacy and vice versa. The civil war divided a nation and forced the issue of race into the national scene as it had never been before. No one could sit on the fence any longer. Young men on both sides were dying (more than 750,000 died) and race was at the center of the dispute that brought on this unparalleled slaughter or a generation. Most died from diseases not gunshot wounds, treatment, medical attention meant that most of these people died bc of disease. Lincoln believed slaveholders should be compensated for slaves -- didn"t have the money.
