Spartan citizens don"t need to work for food b/c their slaves would work the land and provide them food. Citizenship = membership in common mess with 14 others. Had to contribute specific amount of food every month. If any defect they were gitten rid of. Separated from family; lived and trained with others of the same age. Trained in obedience, austerity, and battle: stealing was permitted if not caught.
