The sui only had 2 emperors, while the tang survived much longer. Succession of southern dynasties (all had capital at jiankang) Yang jian, founder of sui, ruled as emperor wendi (581-604) He had previously served as a military general in the northern zhou. Unified north and south in 589 (by defeating the last southern dynasty, chen) Civil examinations: purpose was to recruit officials for the newly restored central government. Came to throne in a coup, killing 2 brothers and forcing his father (the founding emperor) to hand over power. Six boards (ministries): revenue, civil appointments, rites, works, punishments, war. Tang legal code, issued 653, which was the first chinese legal code to survive in full; influence on japanese, korean, and vietnamese rulers.
