Hispaniola (present day haiti/dominican republic) in 1492 and continued with the conquest of mexico in 1519. Colonial mentality of the spanish being superior - clinging to identity. In addition to initiating the process of cultural mixture, or mestizaje, the. Spanish conquest began the process of segregation of the pond. Those of european ancestry had greater access to privilege and opportunity. Through the conquest, the spaniards "stole the pond" from the indigenous populations of the caribbean, mexico, and the rest of latin. The spaniards also excluded the indigenous population from the pond of socio-economic and political opportunity. Chicanx identify closely with the indigenous peoples of mexico and feel that the spanish conquest set in motion fundamental social inequalities which persist to the present day in mexico and latin america.
