Document Summary

Art history 20 week 2 lecture notes. Palace of darius and xerxes, persepolis, 518-160 b. c. e. Built out of stone and mud brick. Representatives of the empire are being led by guards. Based on their attributes they are usually identifiable. Depiction of an annual event where representatives from all over persepolis would come to make offerings to the king. Voluminous robes, he holds a scepter, he wears a crown and he is elevated higher than the other figure all showing that he is the king. The representative bows and recognizes the king"s power. All of these things work together to make the impression of the king - he allows them to come. It looks very archaic greek because the robes are very patterned and draped. Face, hair and beard - we still see texture and contrasting form before him and is accessible. Religion is based around the idea of continuity. Remarkably static culture but change is also present.
