Document Summary

Looking at oldest complex civilization & agricultural social system in city-state: different regions categorize themselves into different social government systems, which define how much power women might have. E. g. women may have more power in regional state (like egypt) instead of city state: patriarchy: rule by the fathers; male authority figure in family own control of social group. Controls female sexuality, procreation, partnership, legality & economic nature. Female not allowed to have job/trade etc. Patriarchy & private property tightly associated; exploitation of land & livestock linked to that of women. Exchange of money for sex (not like in hunter-gatherer society) Only available to men who can afford it. Brought by more stringent sexual morality -> sex only available for rich men. Religions & sexual morality as new invention. Because homosexuality in agricultural society is destabilizing. Nature transcended by religion strictures: harem: social system of important men max. their heirs; women in arabic, harem societies.
