Few countries have female leader; many never had one. Rwanda only country with more than 50% of women in parliament. Crises (war, genocide, death of former ruler) allow women to obtain power. 4 types of power: ideological, economic, military and political (iemp) Political power- power that allows you control over the actions of others. Women in ancient world could have gained ideological power. However, women had to give up something, such as, family. Only 4. 6% of s&p 500 and fortune 500 companies are run by women. Difficult since we have a free market. Easier for women in ancient times for wealthy women to use their money to establish an army and other power. Many companies also have 0% of in executive positions. Women have somewhat more power in military. Often women are in leadership positions rather than combat positions. Need incentives (such as efficient female leaders) to override biological assumptions.
