A&O SCI 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Hadley Cell, Subtropics
Document Summary
The most important feature of the soil moisture distributions in north. America is that soil moisture increases in the mid-latitudinal region. The most important feature of the seasonal variations in north america is that there are higher levels of moisture during the winter spring seasons. The upper latitude areas in north america probably have high level of soil moisture due to the mid- latitudinal jet streams and to some extent some glacier and the melting of ice deposits. The very bottom part of north america is in the subtropics where temperature is high which creates clouds due to rising hot air and thus water vapor levels are very high and condense. This leads to high levels of precipitation, which leads to high levels of soil moisture. The middle of north america is in the upper parts of the hadley cell and therefore has little precipitation.
