Mortality/death rate: number of deaths in a defined population over a specific period. Endemic disease: always present in the population of a particular geographic area. Epidemic disease: a greater than usual number of cases in a particular geographic region, usually within a short time span. Cases increase to a maximum then rapidly drop off. Hospitals: only a small number of infected patients can constitute an epidemic. Observed clustering of cases around water pump. Occurs in epidemic proportions in many countries simultaneously. Influenza a the spanish flu (1918) Reservoir: any site where the pathogen may multiply or survive until transferred to a host. Promote international cooperation, control and eradicate disease.
