Document Summary

They cannot be broken down to any other substance by chemical reactions. 96% of living matter is composed of 4 elements. Made up of only one type of atom. Smallest unit of matter that retain properties of an element. Contain a nucleus made up of protons and neutrons. Atomic number: # of protons in nucleus = number or electrons (unless if its an ion) Mass number: sum of protons and neutrons, roughly equivalent to atomic mass. Same number of protons and electrons= neutral element, net charge of zero. Certain chemical processes cause an atom to gain or lose electrons. Isotopes of an element differ in the number of neutrons. Several isotopes of most elements exist in nature. Less than 1% of carbon exists as 13c. An element is made up of only one type of atoms. An atom is made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Change the protons and you have a changed element.
