Document Summary
Gang is a group of 3 or more people who engage in criminal activity and identify themselves with a common name or sign. Ex: 18th street gangs (la), bloods and crips (la), latin counts (detroit, denver) Gangs are often composed of immigrants and are bound along racial/ethnic lines. The overall number of communities with active youth gangs grew sharply during the last. 20th century, peaked in the mid 1990s, and recently declined somewhat. Gangs in inner city tend to comprised of poorer, non-white individuals. Now, more gangs are emerging in suburbia ( yuppie gangs ) that are more affluent. Between 10-25% of gang members are females. Most female gang members are in mixed but male- dominant gangs. There are only a few female only gangs. Research finds female and male gangs members have different experiences regarding sexuality. They have high rates of sexual victimization and exploitation, even by male gang members.
