SOC 002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Symbolic Interactionism, Labeling Theory, List Of Belgrade Neighbourhoods And Suburbs
Document Summary
Symbolic interactionism- ex: we have certain norms when in a classroom. If you are to stand on your desk, it wouldn"t be appropriate and it wouldn"t make sense in context. How we see ourself is constructed via social interaction (cooley) Stigma: body-disabilities or skin color, character-having a felony and trying to get a job, tribal-scientologist, if you have family that"s a gang member. 1) absolutists- explanation of deviance is simply that people are good or bad. Is someone is bad they commit deviant acts. No one is truly deviant unless we decide that they are; an act is not deviant until labeled as such. Ex: raping your wife, which wasn"t outlawed nationally until 1993. Deviance is usually socially constructed by ruling class or those in power. Criminals aren"t inherently evil but are as labeled as such. Criminal acts are not significant but the social reaction to these acts is significant. Labeling theory builds upon basic premises of symbolic interactionism.
