EDUC 304B Lecture 5: Module 5
Document Summary
The true purpose of assessment" is to determine if the overall goals and objectives are being achieved and that students" needs and learning goals are being met. Per walter (2004), assessment in the classroom has many purposes but should maintain at its core the integration of assessment and instruction (p. 118). According to cte online (2015) assessments are a process of gathering information about what your students know, understand, and can do. Assessments can be used to guide instruction as well as to communicate with students, families, and others about student progress (module 5, chapter 1). Each type of assessment has its own goal or purpose. The goal of pre-assessments are to determine what students know before you begin teaching about a particular subject or topic. The goal of formative assessments are to monitor student progress and learning while providing ongoing feedback that the teacher can use to improve teaching and for students to improve learning.
