Parties had considerable number of upperclassmen (b/c they were the politicians) Struggle between old and new way to control government. Disbanded in 53 bc when crassus died (53 bc) and the death of julia. Pompey married to caesar"s daughter, julia, until she dies in. Pompey"s link with caesar is broken; reassesses political feelings. Cicero (optimate) may have urged him to change sides tury. Pompey was directly related to brutus (3)"s father"s (brutus (2)) death. Brutus was jealous of caesar b/c of caesar"s relationship with his mom. Cato (also optimate) is defeated by caesar in n. africa, commits suicide.
