Document Summary

This experiment showed that organic compounds found in living systems could be generated by combining electricity and simple gases, suggesting that life-generating molecules could have originated in the prebiotic earth. The simplest carbon skeletons are hydrocarbons , molecules consisting only of carbon and hydrogen. Simple hydrocarbons containing no rings and only single bonds are called alkanes and consist only of c-h and c-c bonds. They are named for the number of carbons in the longest chain. When the carbons in a molecule (or part of a molecule) have only single bonds, and all available bonds are with hydrogen, we call the hydrocarbon saturated . bonds result in unsaturated molecules. Hydrocarbons with at least one c=c double bond are called alkenes . Two compounds are isomers if they share the same chemical formula (number of each type of atom) but have different structures, and hence different chemical properties. Structural isomers differ in the arrangement of bonds.
