Document Summary

There is a highly sophisticated manipulation of the elements of style. There are certain elements of style and the artist has addressed them with a very conscious purpose (not because he was inept) The very beginning of art coincided with the extinction of the homo sapiens. They portray the animals as they might be conceived of, with grace and effortless power: the first step to understanding an artwork is to look at the image. It instead contributes to the general impression of the creature rather than a realistic depiction: humans were very rarely depicted, the animals were often painted wounded or with arrows hurdling towards them. It may be that the caves and their art functions in a similar way for paleolithic people. The old beliefs may have been maintained: food remains show that reindeer were a major food source.
