Anthropologists developed concept of culture @ end of the 19th century. Early definition suggested: that complex whole which include knowledge, beliefs, art, law,morals, custom and any other capabilities & habits by man [sic] as a member of society. Modern def: a set of rules or standards shared by members of a society, which when acted upon by the members, produce behavior that falls w/in a range of variation the members consider proper & acceptable . Simplest terms: behaviors & beliefs that are learned & shared . Worms so common among children in some cultures that ppl dont see infection/worm as illness. Malaria in sub saharan africa so common seen as normal. South asia, back pain among women noram so not seen as illness.
