Chapter 1: the principles and goals of global health. Over last 50 years world has made significant progress concerning health. Death rate for children under 5 fell from 148 to less than 48 deaths per 1,000. World life expectancy from 48 68 years. Great progress has been made concerning communicable and preventable diseases. Reason 1: gain better understanding in progress being made with global health issues. Reason 2: understand the challenges that global health faces. Many diseases do not have national boundaries (e. g. , hiv, tb) The world is shrinking (population is growing) There are health disparities amongst certain groups compared to others. Link between health and development is important. Poor health of mother poor health of baby children don"t reach full potential. Children that are ill will delay being enrolled in school affects future economic prospects. Concerns of global health are becoming prominent issues worldwide.
