Contradicts what we already believe in confirms our biases on how the world already works. Sociology gives us the thinking tools to be more open minded and critical minded. College -- what is the most familiar to us! Past few decades college is the prereq to entering the middle class. Obama: going to college is an economic imperative. College is the default option relatively new phenomenon. Seen as the logical next step after high school. Students feel like they have to go to college.
