SOCIOL 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Media Play, Signify, Bioethics
Document Summary
Constructing a social problem: the press and the environment. A central objective in developing a model of the emergence of social problems is explaining the process of translating personal trobourls (and personal concerns) into public issues (collective issues). Some scholars argued that social problems are products of social constructions of reality rather than conditions that exist in society. Social construction(claims-makers) believers communicate their concerns and solutions to social problems to other people. How do you get other people to invest in this issue and share your concerns. How does the media play a role in the development of social problems. There is a distinction among the press corps between those who are more "neutral" and more. The former are pledged to nothing but the facts and reporting the presentation of news, not reflecting their personal opinion. The latter are more committed to exploring all the ratifications -- objective and subjective -- so all relevant information can be presented and communicated.
