Descartes took rational justification to be given only by absolute rational certainty. On the face of it, this seems like the highest standard of rational justification. Maybe i"m being deceived, hooked up to the matrix or being tricked by a demon, but if i"m being deceived and considering that possibility that i must exist. The fact that i doubt my existence mean i must exist. And this existence is not in terms of physicality, but purely that he exists as a thinking being and that is undeniable. He concludes there must be a being in existence outside of him. I have idea of god who is a perfect being. My idea of god is an necessarily existing being. If you imagine god as not existing, that"s not the true idea of god, god must exist because that is fundamental to the idea of god. God is a perfect being and we are imperfect.
