Social movements last longer and have structure they bring in social movements and change. The difference between social movements and collective behavior . Ex) crowds (sports games, crowded beaches, etc); riots; rumors; moral panics (ex - Sin that will tear apart the moral fiber of society); mass hysteria (worry about greatly exaggerated danger that is a external violent threat) Mass hysteria: group reaction to exaggerated danger. Moral panics: group worry and concern about threats to society"s moral fiber. ^ these can turn into social movements. Group of people working together, not individuals. A group that starts to look like a business (hierarchy) These groups used different methods to try to evoke social change. Movements that emerged to combat social movements. Ex) anti-feminist movements didn"t want things that feminist pushed for; liked the status quo -- functionalist perspective. Official positions related to legal decisions and regulations. Gives interests of some groups an appearance of legitimacy.
