Divided in 1954 in war with france. North vietnam was run by communist government. South was run by regime that americans set up in 1955. Brothers turned to americans who sponsored them, and americans gave aid (guns, tanks, airplanes) Even though with assistance, the rebellion grew. Early 60s 30-40% of the country was controlled by communist rebels. Summer 1963: generals of the army of the republic of vietnam, approached the us ambassador (henry cabot lodge). Generals thought that the best thing to do is to change the government. A coup d"etat (overthrow the state, by force). Generals could not do a do so unless given permission by the us, because they put ngo dinh diem in power, and they did not want to loose aid. Generals were given permission to do a coup d"etat. President fled and hid on the border. Generals picked up the brothers like they said, but killed them both.
