An abrupt in shift in a trend or a previously stable state it is the time scale which matters. An example is that overfishing can result,notin gradual decline, but in a population crash. Several phenomena combine to produce an effect that is greater than would have been expected from adding up their effects taken separately . Gradual changes that may be unnoticed may do a surprising amount of damage before it is discovered. Traditional natural and social sciences will not be able to anticipate the problems we engender. How can we make policy if we can"t predict the likely results of our actions. There are no permanent solutions to environmental problems . Our general orientation to policy should not be aimed at solving problems directly, but to keep creating the conditions from which solutions can arise. Production - processing - distribution - preparation - consumption - waste. I clicker - global food system is broken why.
