Participant-observer: researcher role known, but still very involved in setting: duties to do as an intern, deeply embedded as a society as a participant within that society. There may be some fluidity to role status. So embedded in what you"re observing that you"re taking it for granted; don"t see what is interesting and see what someone else from the outside could see. You had a chance in section to try making observations, and you should be beginning to make formal observations in the field for your own project. Can adopt na ve newcomer role, asking for help through questions about how things work: ask open-ended questions where you can help people guide you with things in the setting. Be gracious, relatively unimposing, and engage in give and take, if interacting with people. Keep focus off yourself as researcher; develop brief and generic. Account of your research (without lying of course!)
