Document Summary

Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a german philosopher, cultural critic, and provocateur. He is most famous for his assertion that god is dead and for his critique of ethical/moral philosophies that merely recapitulate the judeo-christian morality long dominant in. Western culture. (kant was particularly guilty, it seems. ) At the time people (kant) thought the upper bourgeoisie way of life was the right way of living. He thought this was ridiculous, this was contingent on certain social developments. Kant was making claims about necessary truths, but nietzsche didn"t think these things were necessarily true or necessary. He wasn"t just saying a part of the argument was wrong and altering the view, but was saying that the entire was of arguing was wrong. Nietzsche"s philosophy centered around the affirmation of life . Nietzsche thinks moralists were suppressing what is good about life. If there is even one moment where you are happy, that is what life is all about.
