PUBHLTH 90 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Stratopause, Atmospheric Circulation, Convection Cell
Document Summary
Climate climate - long term pattern of precipitation, humidity, etc. weather - short term processes (rain, thunderstorm, hail) basic atmospheric science heat transfer. Heat is escaping from interior of earth to surface. Conduction: touching something hot these happen in atmosphere. Convection: fire heats up the air around it, and the air will expand and rise and move a distance, carrying its heat energy w it. Sun shines on earth, and transfers lots of energy to it; heats up the surface of the earth. Surface of the earth is pretty hot compared to the atmosphere on top of it. Air near the surface goes through conduction to get that air to be hot. Hot air expands and rises eventually cools and floats process of convection how a cloud forms if air pocket is on top of water, it"ll be hot but sock up evaporated water from water source. Hottest gases near the surface expand and rise.
