Obsessive compulsive disorder - ocd: people do unnatural things over and over even when they know their actions are irrational. Obsessions: persistent and respective thoughts and impulses. Common obsessions include fear of dirt, harming others, or need for perfection. There are 2 major classes of compulsions: Checking compulsions (check the door to make sure it"s locked) Classical conditioning: being on stage (ns/cs) is paired with insults and ridicule (us) = anxiety (cr) Example: a woman with severe claustrophobia traced fear to childhood dare to get inside coffin. Closed space (cs) is paired with inability to escape (us) = fear (cr) Humans biologically prepared to fear the threats that our ancestors faced like spiders and snakes. Identical twins often develop similar anxiety disorders, even when raised separately. Disorders related to mood: depression and bipolar disorders. Major depressive disorder: person experiences prolonged hopelessness and lethargy until usually rebounding to normality. Prolonged depressed mood or loss of interest in daily activities.
