Document Summary
If you have a depressed parent/sibling, you are more at risk for major depression and bipolar disorder. If one twin has a major depression disorder you have 50% chance of getting it. If one twin has bipolar disorder, you have 70% chance of getting it. The brain depression is linked with lower than normal concentrations of norepinephrine and serotonin. May arise from learned helplessness - when people experience unavoidable failure they give up and become depressed. Fact: women are twice as vulnerable to depression as men. Perhaps women are more likely than men to feel abused or helpless due to lack of personal control over their lives. Explanatory style (the way people explain things that happen to them) Internal causes: i failed the test bc i"m dumb. Stable causes: i will always be dumb. Global attributions: i will probably fail my other classes too. Depressed people do have negative explanatory styles. Depression and negative explanatory style are correlated.
