Document Summary

Fixation: unsolved conflicts can surface as maladaptive behaviors in adult years. Child confronts a conflict at each of the first three psychosexual stages. If conflict is not well resolved, pleasure-seeking energies become permanently focused in that stage. Fixation results in a predominance of attitudes and interests that characterize that stage. Examples of fixation in the oral, anal, and phallic stage: Reduce tension through activities involving mouth (smoking, drinking, nail-biting, etc. ) Parents praise child lavishly for success at toilet training. Child is convinced of the value of (cid:553)producing things(cid:554) at the (cid:553)right(cid:554) time and place productivity/creativity. Parents emphasize punishment, ridicule, shame for failures at toilet training. Anal expulsive traits - messy, cruel, destructive. Anal retentive traits - rigid, obsessive style. Men may go to great lengths to demonstrate that they haven"t been castrated by seducing women, fathering many children, attaining success in job, etc. Defense mechanisms: tactics that the ego develops to help it deal w/ anxiety.
