Things that will be covered during this course: The relation between brain and cognition - Which includes sensory perception, attention, language, and executive function. How the brain is organized to support cognitive abilities. The evidence for the brain basis of cognition which will be illustrated through: Fmri, single-unit phsiology, case studies of patient populations and meta- analyses. How experience is altered when these brain systems fail. The mental process of knowing, including awareness, perception, reasoning, and judgement. This includes sensing, deciding, experiencing, taking action. The mind body problem that exists: does the mind have anything to do with the brain and if it does how exactly does the process work between the mind body connection. Is it possible to learn anything about the mind by studying physical matter. During the course, we will have the approach of studying cognition through a monistic perspective. To learn about the mind, we need to study the brain.
