Document Summary

Self-stigma : my symptoms show that i am weak or different. Even if people sign themselves up for therapy and walk in and are motivated by distress, that does not mean that they are ready to make active changes in their life. Above shows the readiness for an individual"s change. There are different phases that people go through to prepare. Pre-contemplation : not really worried or thinking about changing. Contemplation: aware problem exists, no commitment in changing. Action: actively working to change and make effort. Maintenance: people try to maintain and use skills from treatment to prevent relapsing. Sometimes a function of treatment is preparing people to actually engage in treatment, like in motivational interviewing. People can also move backwards in the model and forward and maybe have differing stages for different things; not always a linear process. Referring to freud"s approach to therapy and efforts to revise and expand upon it.
