Treatment of mental disorders: lifting ring finger while other fingers tucked under palm is impossible, but releasing middle and pinky allows it to be possible, there are treatments, analogy for mental illness treatment. Barbaric treatments: large holes cut in people"s skulls, potions that induce vomiting, etc. Clinical psychologists can be licensed to prescribe medications. Subsyndromal disorders: don"t meet full criteria but are still struggling in some way. Relationship difficulties, confusion about decisions (death of loved one, just moved, etc. ) 40% of people with disorders got treated in the last year. Low percentage has to do with availability of resources, access to care. Ask about what type of therapy they are giving you. First session should be about a good fit. Typically first taught relaxation techniques, muscle tensing and relaxing. Purposefully induce fear response so they practice relaxation techniques and unpair the stimulus with fear response. Change behavior through reinforcement (punishment, rewards. etc. )
