Serotonin and depression redux: depression caused by low levels of serotonin in synapses. Ssris block reuptake of serotonin into neurons: results in more serotonin in synapses. Complications of mental illness: causes of mental illness are seldom unitary. Genetic or other factors result in biological vulnerabilities. Environmental risk factors can then trigger these vulnerabilities. Another form of mood disorders: most common clinical diagnosis. 20 million americans each year: more common in women than men. Primary feature--anxiety, fear, panic, stress: come in several different forms. Generalized anxiety disorder: chronic, pervasive feelings of anxiousness, worry. Panic attacks: often co-occurs with/is confused with depression. Irrational fear of objects or situations: most fears, even phobias, make sense. Phobias are irrationally intense and disruptive of functional behavior. Agoraphobia(fear of going outside/leaving house: cause of phobias. High concordance in mz relative to dz twins. Symptoms-haunting memories, ashbacks nightmares, social withdrawal, depression, anxiety. 2 months post 9-11, 17% of us population et dsm criteria for ptsd.
