Ex. popular books that situates men & women as so profoundly different that practically need gender translator to communicate. Not getting it right has serious consequences. Not understanding contributions of biology to gender differences has destroyed lives. Not understanding contribution of environment to gender has limited career & life choices for men & women. Sex: biological status as male or female, based on chromosomes, hormones, anatomy. Gender: socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, & attributes assigned by society. Study of gender raises issues from all quarter. Gonads, hormones, external & internal reproductive organs, secondary sex characteristics. *influenced to varying degrees by biology & environment. Societal expectations for normal & appropriate female & male behavior. Mental models for understanding the concept of gender & what behaviors are appropriate for the genders.
