PSY BEH 11B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Interference Theory, Forgetting Curve, Sensory Memory

18 views4 pages

Document Summary

A few items both noticed & encoded. Some items are altered or lost when moved to ltm. Depending on interference, cues, moods, motives -> some things get retrieved & others don"t. Information in sensory memory is not attended to. Or information from working memory is not transferred to ltm. If we do not care about information, will not process it on deeper level. Do not rehearse the information or process it on deep level. Would not make associations necessary to store in ltm. Consolidation involves solidifying the memory & occurs after first hour. Memory traces decrease in strength over time. New memories are fragile -> most forgetting occurs in the first hour (before consolidation) Overall, the longer the retention interval (time between learning & retrieval) the greater the chance of forgetting. Still forget even after consolidation due to time. Retrieval failure: info stored in ltm but is not accessible.
