Aphasia: language disorder which results in deficits in language comprehension and production. Brain injuries in certain brain areas can lead to this. About 40% of strokes produce some aphasia, which can be temporary or permanent. Most strokes that cause this occur in the left brain. Wernicke"s area damage to this leads to interruption in language production (left hemisphere) damage to this leads to difficulty with language comprehension (left hemisphere where temporal and parietal lobes meet. In most right-handed individuals, the left hemisphere is specialized for most aspects of language.
