Amputee patients wake up in hospital o claims they can feel leg surprised limb is gone don"t believe it until they see it phantom limb arms, legs, nose, genitals, breast, appendix o sense of touch: sophisticated construction. Phantom pain excruciating can be severe and persistent suicide (shows how compelling experience of the limb is) 2/3 have conscious experience of moving their phantom limb (moves much more slowly than real arm) frozen before cut. Somatosensory cortex left hemisphere (final) central sulcus o correlated with experience of touch, pressure, etc. Thalidomide case cutting off an arm doesn"t cut off area in the brain why one has an experience of a phantom limb. Walk: arms frozen different areas of brain (for talking and walking) Case sailboat beam: lost right forearm amputated: 8 cm below elbow telescoped phantom: no forearm. Wide range of complex sensations two maps of phantom on stump o o one near armpit one on stump.
