Psychology 9a: lecture 3 research method (chapter 1) One of the dullest subjects and also one of the most important. People who do not use appropriate research method in psychological research run a high risk generating false information: ny times: journal"s paper on esp expected to prompt outrage . A professor from cornell said that people get precognition for erotic pictures . Experiment: a software program randomly posted a picture behind one curtain or the other but only after the participant made a choice. Still, the participant beat chance by 53% to 50% when the photos being posted were erotic ones. They did not do better than chance on negative or neutral photo. However, if there are many human subjects with each running many trials, such effect can reach. Statistical significance as determined by standard methods of inferential statistics. If we keep on running experiments of this sort, we will get something that looks like a result just by chance.
