Document Summary
Message travels down axon towards terminal buttons. Gap between terminal buttons & dendrites of next neuron. Where the chemical signals interpreted & processed. Pump 3 positively charged sodium ions out. Pump 2 negatively charged potassium ions in. Membrane is polarized since opposite charges exist on opposite sides. Axons & dendrites can extend far from the cell body of a neuron. When dendrite not transmitting signal -> resting state. When neuron receives signal -> sodium channels in membrane & allow influx of positively charged sodium ions into cell. Also triggers nearby sodium channels to open & depolarize membrane nearby. Depolarization occurs in wave throughout the neuron. Membrane will repolarize by closing the channels & using sodium-potassium pump again. When depolarizing wave reaches synapse -> releases neurotransmitters. Receptors on next neuron receive the neurotransmitters. Diffuse across the gap in the synapse. Specific type of ion is allowed into the cell through opened ion channel.
