Cohabitation: living in a stable relationship prior to or instead of marrying. 8. 3 million u. s. adults were cohabitating in 2015 (up from 439,000 in 1960) 50-60% of all marriages preceded by cohabitation. Cohabitation effect: higher divorce rates among couples who cohabitate before becoming engaged. In 2012, 735,000 adults (65+) were living in a cohabiting relationship. Length of relationship: older adults > younger adults. Older adults may prefer to live in their own separate residence.
