Contemporary views reject idea that no changes occur during adulthood. Early relationships set stage for later development of self and relationships. Ego: part of the mind that controls rational thought. Central part of the mind that helps find balance. Examines the degree of commitment held by the individual to identity issues and the degree of exploration the individual used to arrive at this commitment. Useful in understanding identity formation in earlier years, but less so for midlife and beyond. Generativity involves care and concern for guiding next generation. People high in generativity have children who are happier, more likely to plan for future, higher in prosocial attributes, higher in social interest. The quiet ego (vs. noisy) altruism and concern with larger community. Mentoring, spending time with them, strengthening family bonds.
