Semantics - study of word meanings and combinations. Individuals repeat combinations of words that are modeled and reinforced, and suppress those that are not modeled and reinforced. Might not be sufficient for adequate language development. Statistical learning approach - language learning occurs through tracking probabilities of sequences of linguistic events. If infants have picked up on a statistical regularity, then they will notice the aba pattern after habituation to abb. Humans are prewired to learn language using a language acquisition device. Children across the globe seem to be interested in language and learn it effortlessly. Sensitive period, specifically when thinking about the acquisition of grammar.
