PSY BEH 110D Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Motivation
Document Summary
Seek our information based on things that interest them. Developmental change occurs as a result of counterevidence that refutes previous thoughts or knowledge. Focuses on environmental stimulation, challenges, and reaching goals. Schemes - organized systems of actions or thoughts that enable individuals to mentally represent objects and events in an attempt to adapt to the environment. Adaptation - process through which schemes are altered as a result of experience. Understanding something new by fitting that information in with what is already known. Processing new information according to an existing scheme: identifying an animal correctly as a dog based on previous experience with them. Development of new, more appropriate schemes with information doesn"t fit into existing structures. Putting information into a new mental framework: constructing a new scheme for cats based on a mismatch with dogs. Need to have concordance between existing schemes and reality. Complex act of searching for balance in organization, assimilation, and accommodation.
