Equity theory people are motivated to pursue fairness. Equity theory: equitable relationship= satisfying and compatible. Friendship patterns in mit married student apartment complex. When residents named closest friends: 2/3 came from the same building, 2/3 came from the same floor, most frequently chosen person next door neighbor. Residents in outer 2 downstairs apartments were much more likely to have close friends upstairs than residents in middle downstairs apartments. Reasons for propinquity-attraction relation: probability of interaction, opportunity for reward, social exchange low cost of close friends, adaptive mechanisms. Anticipated interaction benefit of the doubt.
