All of these operate at the same time, but we break them down into chunks in order to focus on the important aspects of each. Psychology in the context of periods of time. Particular researchers often become expects in one developmental period. Some development proceeds similarly across gender, culture, ethnicity . Periods take very different trajectories depending of many variables. Going to college, graduating high school, having children, getting married, etc. Milestones can be cognitive - like piaget - object permanence. Milestones can be physical - taking your first steps. Milestones can be social - getting married. Some milestones are age dependent - like getting a phone, sneaking out for the first time, learning to drive . Some are cohort dependent - getting married because one of your friends does.
