Document Summary

Lecture #6: january 21, 2016 thomas hobbes vs john locke. Page 15 - everyone has reasoning, but it doesn"t last. There ends the state of nature and the conversion to civil society. And which is worst of allthe life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short. You need civil society to keep men in awe to scare them from being vicious towards each other. Locke"s view: the state of nature system partially works but there are some inconveniences . These inconveniences are why we create civil society; not to have a government to create awe, but instead a limited government. Compare hobbes"s and locke"s states of nature; professor argued that they were essentially the same, but using different wording allows them to argue for different governments. From the fact that men are judges in their own case since everyone has the power of law, people have self-love and are ill-natured, passionate and revengeful.
