Society builds the constraints; mill wants to fight against tyranny of government and the majority. Example: our state passes laws that violate laws of the national gov (marijuana in ca): mill thinks laws should either be obeyed or annulled. Our society unfortunately diminishes our freedom of expression by having pc words or socially acceptable opinions: we have non-debatable truisms, that mill believed deserve debate. Page 9: "that principle is, that the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection. That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. : condemnation of the nanny state and a society that tells us what"s good/bad for us.
