Apartheid in south africa implemented in the late 1940"s. It segregated people in the basis of race. Economic and social diferences: pass law you needed a pass to enter certain part of the country, re setlement act removed black south africans from some regions, blacks were not allowed to vote. Democracy is relaively new to the world people have had to ight for it. The countries that have a democracy have been increasing over the past years. Massive increase from 1975 (29% of countries were democraic) to 2010 (59%) are a democracy. Modernizaion theory: countries became socially and economically modern=poliically modern. The principle democraic nature is appealing we all have a say in how and who governs us (collecive decision making). Democracy"s virtues: liberty (freedom of press, associaion, speech, rights to disagree, etc. ) Allows us to debate, to disagree, to deliberate: equality (enjoy the rights of democraic ciizenship each and everyone of us is equal regardless of race etc. )
